We both dreamed of owning our own businesses so we could work for ourselves. My husband was laid off due to downsizing. I had recently stepped away from an unfulfilling career. Well-skilled in his industry he said, “I could do it better.” I said, “I can help.” Does this sound familiar?
Our Story
Those were the famous last words before we embarked on a decade-long roller coaster ride that was our gate and access control business. We were successful, but despite our best intentions, we didn’t work well together. To make a long story short: we have very different work and communication styles and we couldn’t get past it. After 10 years, he found a great job that he loves and I moved on to help other “couplepreneurs” find relief by offering ongoing bookkeeping services.
It’s OK If You Don’t Work Well With Your Spouse
Some couples work really well together, others don’t. It’s not a failure in your relationship – it’s just a misalignment with work personalities. You didn’t get together because you were great business partners, you got together because you wanted to be life partners.
Bring in a Neutral Third-Party
Having a bookkeeper (among other business service support) can provide a neutral, outside perspective on your business. I understand the emotions that can come from succeeding or failing in your business. I know that managing the numbers, tax obligations, payroll reporting, and the other things you don’t yet know can be intimidating. You don’t have to figure everything out – you need to find someone you trust that can take the burden off your shoulders. That person is not always your spouse or family member.
If you’re ready to change the dynamic between you and your spouse/partner/family member/friend that’s “helping you out with the business”, contact Lifestyle Bookkeeping Solutions for a complimentary consultation and preliminary analysis.
